1st Antivirus: A Tool of Cyber Criminals

Written by OSAblog on Saturday, April 25th, 2009

In a world that has cyber criminals in it, you can’t afford to leave your computer unprotected. Cyber crime can affect anyone who has a computer and the criminals are very clever. They have found a way to rob people and they are doing a really good job at it thanks to programs like 1st Antivirus.

1st Antivirus is a rogue antivirus program and cyber criminals use programs just like it to make millions of dollars a year. They fool people into buying these worthless products and give them nothing in return except for damage to their infected computers.

They usually get 1st Antivirus to infect computers through rogue websites. When these sites are visited, holes in the browser’s security are found and exploited. Either a trial version of 1st Antivirus is slipped onto the computer or a Trojan that will download it later is implanted.

1st Antivirus will cause changes in system settings, especially in the browser. Changing your home page is probably the first thing that it will do. Then it will start to deliver pop-up ads to the desktop, even when the computer isn’t online. Once it has done these things, 1st Antivirus will start to bombard the infected user with warning messages telling them that the computer is infected with malicious software.

It won’t be hard to believe the warnings that the computer is infected. The fact that 1st Antivirus is on a computer makes the warnings true, and the pop-up ads makes it very convincing. That is why many users take the next step in the scam and allow 1st Antivirus to scan their computers for malicious software. However, the scan doesn’t really look at anything and creates a fake list of infections.

The user is then pressured into buying the full version of 1st Antivirus so that the infections can be removed. Many people fall for this, but the cyber criminals never programmed 1st Antivirus to remove any threats. They only planned on people falling for the scam and giving them money and their credit card information.
