Adware And Spyware Blockers

Written by OSAblog on Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Like many students, one law school student used Google to come up with a list of online research sources while conducting research for her money laundering thesis. This resource helped her immensely while writing her paper. After several months of doing so, she was confronted with problems like being directed to a weird page totally not related to money laundering every time she types the same words.

The continual nature of the glitch made her discard her original idea that there was a problem with her internet or with Google, and made her believe instead that she had been the victim of a bugging. Getting rid of a human irritation that is bugging us is simple enough. What this law student is confronted with is a computer bug that she cannot fend off: she had been infected with adware and spyware programs. Though the student used her computer daily for the research and writing of her papers, she was otherwise not very technologically educated.

Unfortunately, her case was incredibly common, as there are many people who fall prey to harmful and annoying problems known as spyware and adware. Though it did not gain popularity until 2000, the term ’spyware’ was first introduced in 1995. It describes a script that runs unnoticed on your computer making your personal information available to others without your approval.

Keystrokes, browsing history, and the contents of a hard drive all provide this valuable information. Despite the Hollywood sounding nature of this spying, this very real threat of spyware can happen to anyone. Infiltrations such as these are basic privacy violations and the people targeted are indeed innocent victims. Though the theoretical argument can be made that spyware helps the government in tracking criminal activity, there is no societal benefit to be found in the other purposes of the program, such has tracking credit card data. Because of the potential dangers that spyware brings, you should make sure there is the latest version of an anti-spyware software installed on your computer.

Programs that are similar to spyware, such as malware and adware, should also be blocked for full protection against vicious computer infiltration. This should not be hard, as there are many online adware and spyware blocker programs. Fortunately, malware, spyware and adware do not work in the same way viruses do, however they can still cause your system to malfunction and noticeably slow it down. Along with the trouble they cause, occasionally spyware is sneaky enough to hide from detection, which allows the crime to continue unpunished. It only makes sense to install a good blocker in order to prevent the installation of these infectious programs.
