Is Anti-Virus Software Really Necessary?
Now why do you need anti-virus software on your computer? If you surf the Internet, you need an anti-virus program. If you download movies or music on your computer you need anti-virus software. And if you have kids or even worse, teenagers, their browsing habits will probably risk an onslaught of pop ups or ads you can’t get rid of so, you need anti-virus software. It can offer you peace of mind every time you connect your system to Internet.
Anti-virus software works in two different ways. On the first hand they have a huge database of information about viruses, which allows the software to scan files on a system and flag any suspected files which may be contaminated by viruses. Secondly, the software keeps an eye on the system for any type of doubtful activity and if some illegal file or address is found then it will detect it as virus.
The three biggest players of the anti-virus industry are McAfee, Norton and AVG. While the first two are purely commercial software, based on yearly subscriptions, the latter one has a free edition for home users along with the paid version for commercial users. Norton and McAfee are both quite expensive, especially if you buy them as part of their complete security suite.
The benefits of AVG are that it’s a simple, uncomplicated and effective program. It’s also free and well known for using few system resources to run—it therefore works well even on older computers.
About AVG
Grisoft, now known as AVG Technologies (or just AVG), is the creator of AVG Anti-virus. This Czech giant was formed by Jan Gritzbach and Tomas Hofer in 1991 and since then has earned an excellent name among professional and home computer users in the field of Internet security. The name AVG is taken from their first product, Anti Virus Guard, now simply known as AVG. AVG produces world class products in both free and commercial editions, suitable for Windows 2000 and later Microsoft OS versions. AVG software is especially developed for Microsoft Windows but they do supply versions for Linux and Max OS X too.
The latest Internet security software from AVG is AVG Anti-virus 9.0. The AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0 includes AVG Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware protection, plus the AVG Search-Shield component of the patent pending LinkScanner technology.
However, the commercial edition consists of AVG Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, LinkScanner, Anti-Rootkit, Web Shield and Security Toolbar protection technologies. AVG Anti-Virus plus Firewall 9.0 adds integrated firewall protection. The full Internet suite comprises of AVG Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, LinkScanner, Anti-Rootkit, Web Shield, Security Toolbar, Firewall, Anti-Spam and System Tools protection technologies.
