Extra Antivirus Means Extra Trouble

Written by OSAblog on Friday, May 29th, 2009

If you are not familiar with Extra Antivirus, it is yet another bogus antispyware application designed to fool innocent users into believing their PC is infected with all sorts of viruses and security threats. Fake programs like these leave your computer and personal information vulnerable to all kinds of damage. Avoid this software like the plague, and never download it!

Like many other malicious programs designed to trick the user, Extra Antivirus originates from Trojan horse viruses. These applications are designed by hackers who hope to convince people that threats reside on their PC, and they need this product to remedy the situation. Of course, this costs money which is the whole point. Spending your hard-earned money on this program is a total waste.

Most programs like this are picked up from malicious websites you visit or spam emails. Occasionally, downloading freeware or online games can be the culprit. Be very cautious when online of where you go and what you do. Some applications can cause severe damage to your PC and steal your personal identity. If you become the victim of a rogue antispyware scam, you will no doubt notice many of the symptoms.

Extra Antivirus will cause your computer to slow significantly. You will be bombarded with pop-up windows alerting you to security threats, and your browser may redirect to strange websites as well. Sometimes your homepage may change, or there may be new or flashing icons in your system tray. Avoid clicking on pop-up alerts and downloading the software, as this will only cause additional problems.

Here is how things usually play out when you see these alerts. The message will state that your PC is infected and severe security threats exist. It will ask that you download a free scan to detect and remove these threats. Once scanned, Extra Antivirus will inform the user that infections and threats are too severe to remove without purchasing the full version of the product. Don’t fall for these tactics – this application cannot detect anything at all, nor can it remove infections or threats.

The desired action when you have malicious software installed on your computer is to remove it immediately. While manual removal may be possible by a professional, it is not recommended. You must kill all processes and delete all related files, which is extremely difficult because many of these files hide from the user. If all files are not removed, Extra Antivirus will re-install upon start up, causing potentially more damage to your PC and personal information.

The best action you can take is to use a reliable antispyware tool to scan your computer for trojans, rogue security software, viruses, worms and other infections. Legitimate software will detect these dangers, remove them and protect your PC from future threats. Get a product that is 100% guaranteed to remove all potentially dangerous infections with only one scan, to insure your computer and personal identity are protected.
