Free Firewall Protection Tips – Testing Your Firewall

Written by OSAblog on Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Every computer should have a firewall installed in their PC. It’s a software that monitors the ingoing and outgoing traffic from your PC and with this software, you can monitor every processes that send information to the internet.

There are two types of firewall, hardware or software. However, in this article, I will talk about the software type.

There are lots of this protection software that you can download on the internet. However, not all of it are good. Some are just crap and sometimes, the free one is better than the paid one. So, how can you know which is good and which is not?

Luckily, there is a simple test in order to determine it. It’s a small software called the LeakTest. It will test your firewall by trying to send information to the internet. From this test, you can actually know if your defense system is in good condition.

Some developers actually argue on the credibility and the effectiveness of this testing software. According to them, the simple test didn’t prove anything and people should not believe the software result.

However, if you ask me, if that small software can pass through your firewall, you have to do something. So, the developers should actually fix their software rather than blaming it on the small testing software.

I’m using Comodo Firewall Pro and did the testing before, it passed and I was able to block the LeakTest from sending any information to the outside. Other than Comodo, you can also use the ZoneAlarm Firewall.

Having protection software inside your PC is just the first step in fighting online threats. It’s an ongoing process and you should learn everything that you can about protecting your PC.
