How To Use Firewall To Prevent Virus Attacks
The first and foremost technique of preventing your computer from getting infected by a virus attack is to make use of a firewall. Before using one, one must be sure of what a firewall is and how it works. So we must familiarize ourselves with it’s basics.
How A Firewall Provides Protection Computer Viruses
A firewall can be thought of as an umbrella which protects us from rain. It enforces a total ban on any unauthorized access of any computer application or files by an external server. It also forbids any existing computer virus from gaining access to the internet to prevent any file leakage and provides protections against a computer virus attack.
Thus, it fulfills it’s aim by granting access to the internet to only a selected list of trusted applications. If more have to be added, it can be done so by adding to it’s list of trusted programs in the settings.
According to surveys 73% of the viruses are transmitted to a computer through the internet and so if a person keeps a full control on that, he can easily reduce that 73% of being infected by a virus. Thinking logically, a computer can never be infected by a virus from the internet if it makes an efficient use of the firewall. Since it fully prevents the transfer of any malicious file or application.
Firewalls are usually built in the to the computer utilities in the case of windows. It can be turned on from the control panel and it also has different levels which supply you more integrity in sense of file security.
Advantages of using Firewalls to provide Protection From Virus Attacks
The main advantages of a firewall are that it gives you more security against viruses if an anti-virus is already installed. If the anti-virus is not installed it supplys you with sufficient security to gain safety against dangerous malwares and viruses transmitted through the internet, thus preventing against dangerous virus attacks.
It also prevents the transmission of files right at the time when the request is sent to the computer, this is usually not done by an anti-virus. An anti-virus kills a virus once it is found in the system and has already caused some destruction. Moreover, it also cuts out the cost of an anti-virus and the high system memory occupied by its functionality.
Disadvantages of using Firewalls to supply Protection From virus attack
Firewalls do not have much disadvantages, although some things can be painstaking in their use. Firstly, firewalls are really annoying at times when you install new applications and try to access the internet through them. Secondly, firewalls also prevent transfer of files from trusted sources at times due to which it has to be disabled.
Although firewalls are recommended to use on a computer, it is not recommended at all to only rely on it. Anti-viruses provide protection against all forms of virus attacks and thence they are highly advised which can be accompanied with firewalls.
