Is PrestoTuneup a Legitimate Application?

Written by OSAblog on Sunday, July 19th, 2009

PrestoTuneup is a rogue security program that is not to be trusted. It will display numerous alerts to the user, warning of infected files and other security threats. While the messages that users receive do look very convincing, it is simply a ploy to get them to purchase the product in order to make their PC secure. This malicious application is created by hackers for the purpose of making money on a product that is not capable of performing any kind of action on your computer.

What happens if you do download the scan? PrestoTuneup will supposedly scan your PC for infections and threats. It will then display the results to you, which are completely made up. Additionally, you will be informed that you must purchase the full product in order for it to remove all of these infections and restore security. This product does not scan your computer at all, so it cannot detect any problems or remove them. Do not waste your money!

Malware like this one and others that are similar do have the capability to place more malware on your PC. Most will also track what you do online in order to sell information about your interests to third parties. These third parties will then advertise aggressively to you through pop-up ads, banners and spam emails. Many can also gain access to personal information such as credit card numbers, passwords and other business data. Immediate removal is the best action to take.

When you have PrestoTuneup or other malicious software installed on your PC, you may notice other strange things going on. Besides the incessant pop-up advertisements, you will most likely notice that your computer has become slow, is sluggish upon start up, or that your browser redirects you to strange websites. Your home page may change, or there may be new shortcuts mysteriously placed on your desktop.

While it is possible to remove these rogue security programs manually, it is certainly not advised. This complex task involves a thorough understanding of deleting related files and killing the running processes. The best thing you can do is to get a reputable antispyware application that is guaranteed to remove 100% of infections, worms and other security threats with a single scan.
