Online parental settings

Written by OSAblog on Friday, August 21st, 2009

It is always the duty of the parents to provide the best education to their children. Amidst this, if they find that their kids are misutilising their free time and surfing banned sites, that becomes a grave issue. This is where online parental settings become useful. Through the online parental settings, a parent can control the content which their kids view on the internet.

Online parental settings are tools which are optional in televisions, computer games, videos, softwares and mobiles. There are various modes for online parental settings such as content filters, usage control and monitoring. Content filters are those tools which restrict the access to age-appropriate sites. Usage controls either limits the time or prevents the usage of certain sites. Monitoring is mainly the regulation technique to track the activity in few unlawful sites.

Another technique is add-on parental control devices which regulates API to keep a track of web applications like browser or chat sites. Mainly, all online parental control settings involve passwords or other kinds of authentication. These tools keep a database of abusive words which they track and block them from usage. This technique can be adjusted through the online parental settings.

Some of the tools used for parental guidance also involve a proxy server. A web browser ususally sends requests for online content to the proxy server rather than the web server. The proxy server finds and crawls over the web page from the web server on behalf of the web browser from the internet. The proxy server then passes the content to the broswer. Hereby, the proxy servers inspects and checks the data received and sent which is related to the URL being requested.

Proxy servers may be utilised as parental control devices as well.

Thus, there are various methods which can be used appropriately to implement parental control. This will keep the children from being exposed to sites which are forbidden.
