Written by OSAblog on Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Most people know that computer security is very important. However, according to a research done by National Cyber Securiy Alliance and Symantec, most Americans actually believe that they are safe online but in fact, they are not.

There are many types of online threats such as spyware, malware, rootkit and much more. One of it is phishing and the definition according to Wikipedia is:

In the field of computer security, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

If the criminals get your credit cards, banking username and password, then you’re in big trouble. So, how to protect your PC and you from phishing?

1. You can use McAfee Site Advisor when going online because it can advise you which websites are dangerous and which are not. Download McAfee Site Advisor from McAfee website.

2. Try using Yahoo Search because Yahoo just introduced the SearchScan powered by McAfee to identify which websites are harmful to you.

3. Scan your computer regularly for spyware and adware using Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware.

4. Install a firewall and only allow the processes that you know to send information out from your computer. If you don’t know which process is harmful, search it on Google.

5. Check if the website that you are visiting is secure or not before entering any sensitive information. Secure websites contain ‘https://’ at the website’s URL.

6. If you suspect the website that you are visiting is a phishing website, don’t enter any sensitive information.

These are some tips that you can use to protect yourself from phishing. It’s not much but at least you can protect yourself when going online.
