Presto Tuneup is a Fake Windows Registry Cleaner

Written by OSAblog on Saturday, July 18th, 2009

Presto Tuneup is a fake system optimization tool and Windows registry cleaner. Like rogue security programs, it displays many alerts to the user informing them that serious registry errors exist, and should be repaired. Like bogus antispyware programs, this one is created for the purpose of making the user believe their registry contains many errors, so that they will purchase the product.

This application will be configured so that it automatically starts upon start up of your PC. It will pretend to scan your system, and then display results indicating that your registry is corrupted with all types of errors. These results are fabricated, as the program cannot scan your computer or detect anything at all. Like other malware, it may have the ability to collect information about what you do when you are online. This information will then be sent to third parties, so that they can send pop-up advertisements and spam emails to you advertising their products.

The messages displayed by this fake system optimization tool often look very authentic to the user. By frightening you, the hackers who create this malware hope that you will buy their product. This bogus application is capable of installing additional malware on your PC, which can cause damage. If this fake has been installed on your computer, it should be removed immediately to avoid further possible damage and infection.

The symptoms are similar to other rogue antispyware applications. You may notice that your computer becomes slow and does not perform efficiently. Your browser may redirect to other websites advertising the product. Overall, it can affect the stability of your PC and install files that are very difficult to remove. Manual removal is possible, but should not be attempted unless you are an expert in these difficult processes.

If you are suspicious that a rogue Windows registry cleaner such as Presto Tuneup is installed on your PC, remove it with a legitimate antispyware application. Be sure to choose one that is guaranteed to remove 100% of infections with only one scan. This way, you can be certain that your system is secure once again.
