Where It Came From and What It Does to PCs

Written by OSAblog on Monday, September 7th, 2009

Occasionally, browsing on the internet may be interrupted by something known as a JavaScript error.  There are also often references to the JavaScript scripting language on technical programming websites, which may be stumbled upon in searching for something else.

Whatever the reason for encountering the term, many are left wondering what it means.  If it is connected with an error message, computer users may be curious about what it implies for their PCs.

Origins of the JavaScript Language

JavaScript is the name of a scripting language.  This refers to the code used to create interactive features on websites.  Anytime a user interacts with a drop-down menu, rolls their mouse over an image that changes, or encounters an animated image, a scripting language has created this effect.

A developer of Netscape first created this language, and it was debuted with the release of the Netscape browser 2.0B3 in December 1995.  This coincided with a deal between Java’s parent company, Sun Microsystems and Netscape.

Though the names are similar, JavaScript shares very few surface similarities with the Java programing language (for writing computer programs, rather than websites) and should not be confused with it.

Encountering JavaScript Errors

PC users may be very familiar with the term “JavaScript error” because it occurs so often.  When an error message like this appears, it means that the code written into the web page being viewed contains an error or cannot be read by the internet browser being used.  Some aspects of that page may not work correctly.

While a JavaScript error does not mean that an error has occurred within the user’s computer, it can mean that erroneous entries have been stored in the PC’s Windows registry.  This will contribute to the overall chaos of the average registry, polluting it further and making it more prone to creating errors that do stem from that computer.  Blue screen messages, DLL or EXE errors, computer freezes, or general slow operation all signify corrupted registry entries bogging down a PC.

Preventing the Effects of JavaScript Errors

PCs run a lot of different programs and may be used by several different users, both of which make changes to the registry and other files.  The best way to maintain a healthy, error-free computer is to be aware of and perform regularly scheduled maintenance on the system.  Back up files regularly, de-fragment the hard drive, delete unwanted programs, and maintain JavaScript with a trusted registry cleaner.
